Northland Region

Northland, where the balmy climate nurtures subtropical fruit and gourmet vegetables, is the new frontier for gastrotourists heading off in search of fresh food experiences and delectable wines.
Award winning chefs and funky barista jostle with stunning locations to serve Northland’s bounties. Not only is Northland the Birthplace of the Nation, it’s also where European settlers planted the first grapes, olives and fruit trees in New Zealand.
Accolades have been awarded to Northland cheese makers; citrus fruits and olives are grown widely. Locally made chocolate and locally roasted coffee beans are a treat; the seafood is plentiful, fresh and magnificently varied.
The culinary feast you’ll find here is equally complemented by our award-winning wines. The first vines in New Zealand were planted in the Bay of Islands by the missionary, Reverend Samuel Marsden in 1819.
Our vineyards consistently produce medal-winners and have established a reputation for chardonnays and pinot gris. Our reds such as syrah (shiraz) and pinotage are just as highly regarded.
Visitors are welcome to call in for tastings and cellar door sales and some vineyards offer coastal or rural views with restaurants that cleverly combine Mediterranean ambiance with a distinctive Northland flavour.
