Levantine comes from the word Levant. The Levant is historically known as the geographical area east of the Mediterranean See where countries like Syria, Jordan and Lebanon are now located. Throughout history, The Levant was the land of trade and agriculture. One of the most ancient civilizations flourished in Damascus. Palm trees grow naturally in The Levant and in the rest of Arabian and Persian land. Dates are harvested by the end of summer after getting exposed to strong summer sun. People use dates in all sorts of occasions. Dates are cooked, baked as deserts or served as a snack with coffee.
Growing up in that part of the world, the love of dates was passed to us from our parents and grandparents. We learnt the different date types and which ones are best for what. Moving to New Zealand with our three children, we wanted to share our love for dates with the rest of New Zealanders simply because we believe it is a story worth sharing. You can also find us most Sunday mornings at the lovely Clevedon Market.
